In a surprising move, the Miami Dolphins have released veteran defensive tackle Teair Tart, just weeks after expressing the need for more consistency from him. The decision comes as the Dolphins are looking to solidify their defensive line following the departures of key players Christian Wilkins and Raekwon Davis.

Tart was initially signed with the expectation that he would compete for the starting nose tackle position, a role left vacant by Davis’ move to the Indianapolis Colts. The Dolphins hoped Tart would provide a strong presence in the run defense, which had shown vulnerability. Instead, Benito Jones emerged as a leading candidate for the job, securing the first-team role early in training camp. Tart’s struggles with physical conditioning during the offseason program and a recent absence from practice contributed to the team’s decision.

Despite being praised by Dolphins defensive line coach Austin Clark for his power on the field, Tart’s performance failed to meet the team’s consistency expectations. Clark had emphasized the need for Tart to eliminate sporadic flashes of brilliance and instead deliver steady performance in both the run and pass games. Unfortunately, Tart was unable to achieve the level of consistency required.

Tart’s release is also notable given his background and career history. The FIU alum has accumulated 79 tackles, 16 for loss, 2.5 sacks, an interception, and a fumble recovery over 47 career games, including 36 starts, with the Tennessee Titans. He was released by the Titans last December before joining the Dolphins.

Tart did not play in the Dolphins’ preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons, and his absence from practice and subsequent release suggest the team was dissatisfied with his overall contribution. The Dolphins will now need to look for alternatives to fortify their defensive line as they move forward in the preseason and prepare for the regular season.
